Sindh Homoeopathic Medical College
and Hospital was founded by late H/Dr. Muhammad
Ismail Nami Mogul,
born on 1st January 1904 in Hoshiyarpur, East Punjab to provide a centre for
quality education and training in classical homoeopathy. Dr. M. Ismail Nami
was among the prominent homoeopaths of the first homoeopathic
college "The Central Homoeopathic
Medical College" which was opened in Lahore in early 1920. It produced many eminent
homoeopath physicians of British India
before the birth of Pakistan. After the independence on 14th August, 1947, many eminent homoeopaths
settled in Karachi and Hyderabad, whereas Karachi became the center of homoeopathic
activities. Some homoeopaths took the initiative and the Pakistan
Homoeopathic Association was formed but this Association was very
short-lived. Another body, Pakistan Homoeopathic Federation was formed in
1949, at Karachi. The first Pakistan Homoeopathic conference was held
under the auspices of the Federation in Sept. 1949 at Karachi. For 18 years after the creation of Pakistan, homeopathy was practiced widely but remained officially unrecognized.
In 1950, Dr. M. Ismail Nami formed a non-governmental society namely
"Khalid Memorial Welfare Society". This society became the
milestone through which various educational, welfare and social services
were being provided on regular basis to the poor and needy people of Hyderabad.
Under this Society four separate high schools, for girls and boys, one
primary school and one oriental college was successfully running at that
time.
In 1965, the Government passed an act under which homeopathy and the indigenous herbal systems of medicine were regulated. Homeopaths wishing to continue their practice were assessed by a Government nominated Board of Senior homeopaths. All practitioners with sufficient experience and knowledge of the system were formally registered and allowed to continue their practice.
It was in 1965, when Dr. M. Ismail Nami felt the need of Homoeopathic
education to be introduced in Hyderabad city, which motivated him to laid
the foundation of Sindh Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital. In
1972, the Government of Pakistan took a step to nationalized all the
educational institutions. Due to this, the doors for progress were closed
on the SHMCH.
Dr. M. Ismail Nami, then took constructive action and after some
struggle was successful to obtain a separate building, from the Government
of Pakistan, in Gurunagar, Hyderabad.
In October 1979, with the efforts of Dr. M. Ismail Nami, a homoeopathic
clinic and dispensary was established in the college premises, for the community
people, to provide basic health facilities through Homoeopathic Medicines.
Moreover, this clinic is also helpful in providing practical training to
the students of final year, who are required to spend six months house job
period as part of their studies.
On April 21, 1980, Dr. M. Ismail Nami, the founder of Sindh Homoeopathic
Medical College & Hospital passed away from this world (God Bless His
Soul) leaving the beacon of hope for the people of Sindh.
Since 1980, the college is run by
Dr. M. Farouk Ismail Nami, son
of late Dr. M. Ismail Nami, who is at present the Principal of diploma
campus and Head of the degree campus. Under the leadership of Dr. M.
Farouk Ismail Nami his team of dedicated personnel is responsible for the
smooth running of both these Institutions.
Today, the college provide a rigorous grounding in
medical sciences as well as incorporating diverse healing
philosophies, holistic counseling and an integrated approach
to the cause of disease, assuming the interdependence of mind,
body and spirit. The college offers exceptional teaching and training programs for
those wishing to become practicing homeopaths, with courses
being taught at the Diploma and Degree campuses in Hyderabad, Sindh, Pakistan.
